Laser Therapy

A laser delivers an intense burst of light on to the skin and this is of a single wavelength. Different cells in the skin absorb different wavelengths. So depending on what  wavelength of light is emited by the laser depends on what cell in the skin is targeted. The aim is to target only the problem cell and to leave the surrounding tissue unharmed. For instance blood cells absorb a certain wavelength and so a laser that emits this wavelength is able to treat vascular lesions.

There are many lasers available but at Northern Sydney Dermatology only medical grade lasers are used. We offer both the V Beam Perfecta® Pulsed Dye Laser and the GentleMAX® Laser. Combining both of these lasers enables Northern Sydney Dermatology to offer multiple wavelengths of 595nm, 755nm and 1064nm. This unique combination allows us to effectively offer a range of services including removing unwanted hair, leg and facial veins, fine lines, vascular lesions and pigmented lesions. Both of these lasers have a dynamic cooling device for comfort and safety. Our staff are trained to meet the highest of standards expected by our dermatologists.

These two lasers are fast and and also comfortable. This comfort is due to the dynamic cooling method, or DCD. This delivers a cooling mist on to the skin just before the laser pulse is emitted. This mist helps to protect the skin to minimise side effects and increase comfort during treatment.

Vascular Laser

vbeamwebA vascular laser delivers a light that is selectively absorbed by the blood vessels in the skin. Here at Northern Sydney Dermatology we have the VBeam Perfecta® Pulsed Dye Laser. This is considered a laser of choice for redness reduction as it is effective with a low risk profile. With a larger spot size (treatment area) large lesions can be treated quickly. This laser can be used to treat redness of the face and neck along with spider veins and broken capillaries. It can also be used to treat rosacea and vascular birthmarks.

Pigment Reduction Laser

This laser targets melanin, which sits inside the pigment cells, in the skin. The depth in the skin and the intensity of colour determine the effectiveness of the laser treatment. The pigment reduction laser at Northern Sydney Dermatology can be used for pigment reduction including brown freckles on the face, chest and hands. It can also used for age spots.

Hair Reduction Laser

A hair reduction laser can be used to treat excess hair on just about any site on the body. Many people have problems with other hair removal treatments that cause pimples and rashes, and this is where a hair reduction laser is very useful. This laser targets dark hairs. In the past only people with lighter skin types could be treated but this has changed and the laser system at Northern Sydney Dermatology is able to be used on darker skin types as well.

Leg Vein Laser

Leg vein lasers can be used on small veins on the legs up to 2mm in diameter. Larger veins need to be treated prior to laser therapy to avoid recurrence. Often a leg vein ultrasound is required prior to laser treatment to ensure that there are no larger veins that should be treated first. If you need this, then this will be discussed at your initial consultation.

Laser Treatments at Northern Sydney Dermatology

Your dermatologist will firstly ensure that you are suitable for the treatment. Once this is established most patients are lying down depending on the area being treated. Protective eyewear will be used to protect your eyes. When treatment begins, the laser will be calibrated and the parameters set based on the condition being treated. The laser treatment will then begin with most patients feeling a tingling or stinging sensation. No anaesthetic is required for treatment with the VBeam Perfecta® Pulsed Dye Laser or the GentleMAX® Laser.
